Remember Me. | March 22, 2010

As the cliché goes, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” Well, apparently you can’t judge a film by its trailer either. Remember Me is not what it is portrayed to be. Sure, it is essentially a love story but it goes so much deeper than that and it’s a shame that some may overlook this gem simply due to the marketing campaign and the presence of Robert Pattinson.

"Gandhi said that whatever you do in life will be insignificant. But it's very important that you do it. I tend to agree with the first part."

I’ll admit I was extremely skeptical of this film for those very reasons. I initially thought, “Oh, here’s another gimmick that a studio threw together to make some quick cash.” Thankfully, I was very wrong.  Remember Me is a powerful and moving film, filled with sincerity and strong performances. It grips your attention at the very beginning and doesn’t let go. This is one that will keep you reminiscing about its emotional conclusion days after you’ve left the theater.

The story follows Tyler Hawkins (Robert Pattinson) who is a genuinely good guy but has some rough patches here and there. He is extremely caring of his younger sister Caroline, played wonderfully by Ruby Jerins, yet is quite disconnected from the rest of his family, especially his father (Pierce Brosnan). After a string of events, his friend/roommate convinces him to pursue Ally Craig (Emilie de Ravin) and eventually love blossoms.

But the film is so much more than that.

I don’t want to go into too much detail because I don’t want to spoil anything about the deeply dramatic experience but all that you really need to know is that the acting is very well done, the writing is strong, and the story is engaging and powerful. It was nothing like what I expected it would be and I mean that in best way possible. If you happen to be on the fence about whether or not to see this film, see it. I’ll be quite surprised if you were to walk away disappointed.

★★★½
